Edgar Allan Poe invented the detective story, so turning him into the heroic sleuth of a mystery thriller makes perfect sense.. This wannabe Sherlockian thriller is like a night spent at Madame Tussauds, watching mannequins strangle other mannequins.. We immediately understand why Cusack is not known for playing men who lived before 1984.. The pervasive gore overpowers the few clumsy attempts at wit here.... The story has its moments, and yet there is something about this tale of a serial killer...
